Agri-Food Discovery Place is a University-owned pilot plant facility. It is a world-class innovative research, training, and technology transfer facility and provides education to highly qualified individuals.

AFDP supports five research platform technologies which include:

1. Meat Safety & Processing (level 2 containment)
2. Carcass & Meat Science
3. Natural Health Products & Functional Food
4. Animal Nutrient & Ingredient Development (including petfood formulation and extrusion)
5. Fermentation for optimization and scale up of level 1 microorganism

The Bioresource and Food Processing Research Unit (BFPRU wing) at Agri-Food Discovery Place works closely with academic and private sector partners to develop new products/ingredients, and on process development and scale up of processes as required. This research unit has 1055 square meters (11,356 square feet) of area housing eight (8) specialized and specially equipped laboratories.

The Poultry Research Centre (PRC) is an internationally recognized collaborative R&D and learning hub formed in 1986. The PRC is located on the University of Alberta Farms, South Campus in Edmonton. It is also a unique partnership between the University of Alberta, Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, and the poultry industry. The PRC consists of an interdisciplinary team of scientists who conduct research aimed at benefiting egg and poultry producers, food processors and manufacturers, functional food and nutraceutical industries.
